Native Canadian Tribes & Names in Canada

Native Canadians who stepped foot in the Americas long before the white man, have intriguing stories behind their names.

Native Americans were among the very first people to enter the land we know as Canada. They migrated there from Siberia by using a man made bridge to cross the waters. Since they were used to a nomadic lifestyle it wasn’t difficult for them to walk the many miles. They mainly went into Canada to be able to find food sources. There was no shortage of them around Canada.

One of the main food sources for the Native Americans was buffalo. They were found on the plains in Canada. Other types of animals including rabbits and deer were plentiful as well. Due to the many rivers along the boarder of Canada they were able to get fish when they wanted to as well. In addition, fruits, nuts, and berries were removed from trees and plants.

Since Canada was mostly desolate at that time, the Native Americans didn’t have to worry about crossing into other civilizations by settlers for many decades. There were conflicts though between the various tribes. Some of them have friendly relations but for the most part there were wars that took place over various aspects of their individual cultures.

As The French and British began exploring Canada the Native Americans did feel threatened. Their ability to roam freely in the land was changing. The French established small colonies in Canada to help with the fur trading process. There were many conflicts between the white settlers and the Native Americans in Canada.

Most of the were the result of the white people not understanding the ways of the Native Americans. At the same time, they were quite upset at how the white people had no respect for nature or the land. The Native Americans had always been in harmony with them and only used what they needed. These early white settlers didn’t have the knowledge of the Native Americans in order for them to thrive in Canada either.

Native Americans don’t have first names and surnames like the many other cultures. Instead they have names that are a reflection of their society. These names often have to do with things important to them including nature, the sun, the moon, and animals. Sometimes the name has a meaning that comes from the ancestors of the person as well.

In the Native American tribes, the names for each person were very carefully chosen. They believe that the name you have is your honor and that it should be something you can live up to. When you study Native Americans in Canada you will likely come across many names that are unique and interesting.
