Native Canadians, Northern Canadians, British & French.
Canada was established due to a variety of different people from various locations coming to the area. The first were the many Native American tribes who migrated to the area. They did so in order to find food and that they did in Canada. They were able to follow the buffalo and other animals to hunt. They also found the rivers to be plentiful with fish. On the plains they accessed plants and animals for various types of food as well.
The French have played a huge role in the development of Canada. They were among the first to set up colonies that actually stayed in the area for any length of time. Initially the purpose of these colonies was to further the fur trade along a given route. However, many of the people came to like the area. The main problem was that the people didn’t have the skills they needed to successfully farm the land. They weren’t nomadic like the natives so this proved to be a challenge.
The British have to be commended for their role as part of the roots of Canadian history as well. With the onset of the American Revolution around 1774 many of the British settlers in the original 13 colonies didn’t want to revolt against it. To show their continued loyalty they moved into areas of Canada today know as New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
There were labeled at that time as United Empire Loyalists. They have been recognized for developing what later became known as Ontario. These early settlers have a significant role in the development of Canada due to their influence. They helped to determine laws in the land during those early formation years.
In the early 1800’s the Irish began to immigrate to Canada in the hopes of a better life. Tired of famine and poor living conditions they decided that they could stay in Ireland and die or they could try for something better. Most of them settled into the areas today known as Newfoundland.
With them, the Irish brought their language, traditions, and religious beliefs. They were able to establish colonies that were able to effectively live off the land. They also knew how to fish in the waters to get enough food to sustain their people. This was quite a difference from what they had known in Ireland. They were very influential and you can still find the effects of it around Canada today.
